Painter & sculptor| Germany
Gerd Kanz – Born in Erlangen / Germany in 1966, Gerd Kanz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg with professors Scharl (master student) and professor Grützke. In the years 1989 – 1998 Kanz received various awards and the scholarship Ebernburg of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The artist lives and works near Coburg and on the island of Crete.
Kanz creates unusual pictures with object-like surfaces. Elaborately he works on surfaces with cracks, furrows, small plates and elevations. In subtle colors, he creates brittle layers of paint with great expressivity and luminosity in oil and tempura.
The arch sculptures by Gerd Kanz show the fascination of the form of a component of Christian and Islamic architectural history. The three-dimensional wall objects or freestanding sculptures show curved forms and remind of historical power architecture. What initially seems open, proves to be an impenetrable grid and shows a tense game.
Gerd Kanz can be seen in national and international exhibitions.
